In a groundbreaking move to tackle Liberia’s electricity challenges, the government is in active discussions with Runda Solar, a renowned multi-million-dollar solar energy company, to develop a significant 250-megawatt solar power project in Montserrado County. This venture is anticipated to considerably strengthen the nation’s power supply, impacting both urban and rural areas.
The ambitious proposal put forth by Runda Solar would not only fund the entire solar installation but ultimately hand over ownership to the Liberian government for integration into the national grid. Through strategic Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and Feed-in Tariffs (FiTs), Runda Solar aims to establish a sustainable revenue model, allowing the company to recoup its investment while contributing to Liberia’s green energy future.
Founded in 2009, Runda Solar has grown into a global leader in the solar industry with a production capacity of 4GW for photovoltaic modules, 10GW for solar cells, and 1GWh for energy storage systems. Their global reach spans across multiple continents, including offices and projects in Germany, Spain, France, India, Japan, and Australia, showcasing their dedication to green, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
Runda Solar operates a comprehensive business model that covers the photovoltaic supply chain, from R&D and production to sales and solar power system construction. CEO Ibrahima Traore of Zoom Network, who facilitated Runda Solar’s invitation to Liberia, believes this project aligns with the government’s vision for sustainable development. Beyond generating power, the initiative includes plans for training programs aimed at equipping local technicians to make solar energy accessible and affordable across Liberia.
Runda Solar representatives, including Overseas Market Development Head Chuang Zou, are currently meeting with officials from Liberia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy and other key government departments, signaling promising steps forward in this transformative partnership.
